The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America held a convention in Indianapolis during the last week of September in 1914. The biennial meeting attracted five hundred delegates to the city and meetings were held at the German House, now the Athenaeum. Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor, addressed the convention on September 23rd that week. Gompers is seated in the front row and is wearing a hat. The group is in front of the local headquarters at 222 East Michigan Street in Indianapolis. The building has been altered a bit and is now the Carpenter Apartments.The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990....
